Police have arrested six minors who allegedly broke into and vandalized the community hall in Sandy Bay.

Last Friday, May 8, at 1:30 am, Sandy Bay RCMP were dispatched to an alarm at Gary Morin Memorial Hall.

Upon arrival, police said they saw four people exiting and running away from the front of the building. The suspects ran into a field across from the building.

Officers pursued the individuals on foot and were able to catch up with one of them, who was arrested without incident.

The youth was carrying a Canadian flag and flagpole that had been taken from inside the building.

RCMP continued following the three remaining suspects. Officers in the field arrested a second youth without incident.

Patrols in the area failed to locate the two other suspects.

Officers conducted a walk-through of the building and noted significant damage to equipment inside. A television, video camera and other equipment had been thrown and smashed.

Police said further investigation determined six individuals were involved. All of them were subsequently located in Sandy Bay and arrested without incident.

Each of the accused is charged with one count of breaking and entering and one count of mischief over $5,000.

All of them are minors whose names cannot be released as per federal law.

Two of the accused were remanded into custody to appear in Pelican Narrows Provincial Court yesterday.

The other four individuals were released on a promise to appear in Sandy Bay Provincial Court on July 9.

Sandy Bay is a reserve located 190 km outside Creighton. It is part of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.
