The Flin Flon Arts Council wants to erect a sign outside the Community Hall to promote various happenings in the community. At Tuesday's city council meeting, the organization's Linda Allen outlined a proposal for a sign to advertise events such as workshops, Arts Council shows and the Trout Festival. "We found a sign that we think would be quite adequate for our needs," she told the councillors. Allen described the proposed sign as four feet, two inches high and eight feet, six inches long with adjustable legs. Coun. Dave Law mentioned there were concerns when council initially looked at the proposal as to "what the aesthetics would be to that sign Ð it's going to be in a highly visible area." Coun. Law added that he needed clarification as to whether the sign would be an issue with the Department of Highways because of the proximity to Highway 10. Council recommended Allen meet with Rick Bacon, Director of Works and Operations, to further discuss the matter. In another matter, council approved a $200 payment for a 2005 membership with the Hudson Bay Route Association. "The group is dedicated to keeping the port of Churchill open," noted Coun. Tom Therien, "and with that we also keep our rail lines open, or hope we keep them open, and that's of benefit to us. So our membership in this association is quite imperative." As well, council approved a variation order for the construction of a 24 ft. by 32 ft. garage on Whitney Street. The owner plans to demolish his existing garage and replace it with a larger structure.
