The shooting of a Cranberry Portage woman on Sunday does not appear to be intentional, police said yesterday. Police believe the woman may have been unintentionally struck by a stray bullet from a hunter, as several residents have reported hearing distant shots from hunters on Sunday. Cranberry Portage RCMP are now looking for the public's assistance in identifying any hunters who may have been in or around the Cranberry Portage area on Sunday afternoon. At approximately 5:30 p.m. on October 5, a 35-year-old resident of the community was struck by a bullet in her pelvis region while working in her front yard on Railway Avenue. The woman was taken to the Flin Flon General Hospital and later transported to Winnipeg in stable condition. Police said surgeons at the Health Sciences Centre extracted a "larger calibre" bullet from the victim and added that she is expected to return to Flin Flon this week to continue her recovery. The police investigation is ongoing. Police are urging hunters to be aware of what lies beyond their targets and remind them that high-powered rifle rounds are capable of traveling several miles. Anyone with information on Sunday's incident is asked to contact Cranberry Portage RCMP at 472-3611 or Manitoba Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
