A public inquest into the fatal police shooting of a man in Prince Albert will be held next week.

Ryan Natomagan-Nelson, 26, died on July 9, 2013, in an altercation with the Prince Albert Police Service.

Police said at the time that two officers shot Natomagan-Nelson after he confronted officers with a knife following a domestic dispute call, according to The StarPhoenix.

Natomagan-Nelson’s cousin, Joshua Brown-Nelson, told the newspaper that officers could have used a Taser or a baton stick to deal with the situation rather than shooting him.

In Saskatchewan, Section 19 of The Coroners Act, 1999 states that the Chief Coroner may direct that an inquest be held into the death of any person.

In addition to establishing who died, when and where the individual died, the medical cause of death and the manner of death, the coroner’s jury can also make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

The inquest has been scheduled for Sept. 8 through 12 at the Prince Albert Travelodge in Prince Albert with coroner Brent Gough of Saskatoon presiding.
