A brainy former Flin Flonner and Reminder reporter has received a prestigious honour from one of America's top universities. Marla Sullivan (nee Allen) has earned the title of Carolina Research Scholar from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 'The Carolina Research Scholar Program is a great way to encourage students to enroll in research-intensive courses, conduct and present original research, and become exposed to interdisciplinary research practices,' Sullivan said. Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Science (BSIS) from the university last year. During her studies, she completed the Carolina Research Scholar Program. To complete the program and be designated a Research Scholar, students must complete one multidisciplinary course and two research-intensive courses. They are also required to present their research at a professional conference or at the university's annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research. Sullivan presented her research _ titled 'Building a Memory Palace in the Cloud: Instructional Technologies and the Method of Loci' _ in April 2012. 'As an undergrad, my research focused on instructional technologies,' she said. 'I completed an undergraduate honours thesis as well. Since I was a BSIS major and Cognitive Science minor, I had a lot of opportunities for drawing on research from both disciplines.' Since graduating, Sullivan has been working with the university's Information Technology Services Teaching and Learning department, which focuses on instructional technology applications and integration to support the university's academic mission. In the fall, she hopes to be accepted into a Ph.D. program that focuses on Learning Sciences. Sullivan was a freelance reporter for The Reminder in 2000. Her university is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. _ With files from a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill news release
