Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the following areas:
- Cumberland House
- Hanson Lake Road between Hwys 165 and 135
- Hanson Lake Road east of Hwy 135 including Creighton
- Highway 135 including Pelican Narrows and Sandy Bay
- Seabee Mine
The alert reads as follows:
"Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue through early this evening as a low pressure system moves across the province. Some of these thunderstorms are expected to be severe, with large hail and damaging winds being the primary threats. In addition, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The Prairie and Arctic Storm Prediction Centre will closely monitor the situation throughout the day. Be alert for further watches and warnings as the day wears on.
Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall."
