Education Minister visits Flin Flon On September 20, Education Minister, the Honourable Peter Bjornson, and I were pleased to attend a noon luncheon hosted by the Flin Flon School Division. Frank discussions ensued regarding the best way to meet the challenges faced by the Flin Flon School Division. We enjoyed speaking with students, staff and trustees during our brief visit and we have learned directly and first-hand the direction that needs to be charted to ensure continuing quality education for Flin Flon students. Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra On the evening of September 21, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with the Flin Flon Community Choir provided a fabulous evening of entertainment for the music lovers of the Flin Flon area. Congratulations to all who were involved in making this premier cultural event a reality. I am extremely pleased that I was able to play a small role in the initial planning of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Northern Tour. Maestro Boreyko and his musicians were extremely impressed with the musical talent available in the city of Flin Flon and surrounding area. Snow Lake Health Centre Extension It was with great pleasure that on September 21 I was able to bring greetings and congratulations from the Honourable Dave Chomiak, Minister of Health, at the official opening of the long-term care facility extension at the Snow Lake Health Centre. Congratulations to Snow Lake, NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority, and the District Health Council for their unwavering support for this important project. The long and sometimes frustrating journey to complete this project is finally over. Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference The 50th annual Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference took place in Ottawa, Quebec City and Toronto this year. The nine day conference (September 1-9) involved some 600 participants from 53 nations. I was honoured, along with five other colleagues (from both sides of Manitoba Legislature) to join the speaker, the Honourable George Hickes, in a very worthwhile conference. Some of the major topics under debate were: how to make political institutions more accountable, how to increase grassroots participation in the democratic process, how to combat racism and how to insure a more equitable gender representation in parliaments and legislatures. Bakers Narrows Speed Zone The public meeting scheduled by the Highway Traffic Board for September 23 in Flin Flon has taken place and for many constituents who wanted a permanent 70 km/h speed zone in Bakers Narrows, the outcome was very positive. The Highway Traffic Board has ruled that the seasonal 100 km/h zone at Bakers Narrows be reduced to a permanent 70 km/h zone. This permanent lower speed zone should reduce traffic accidents in the future. New Cabin Lot Draw Announcement On September 28 in The Pas I was pleased to join a number of dignitaries including Conservation Minister, the Honourable Stan Struthers and Northern Aboriginal Affairs Minister, the Honourable Oscar Lathlin, at the official launch of the second round of public draws for the lease or purchase of cottage lots. The second draw will take place on November 2. This draw includes 125 new lots and 80 unclaimed lots from the previous draw. Out of a total of 205 available lots about 140 are waterfront lots. There will be a third draw in the coming spring in the ongoing initiative to provide 1,000 new cottage lots across the province.
