2003 September 2 Ð Bargain hunters had their sights set on the Elks Hall over the weekend, helping the Flin Flon Elks Club raise about $6,500. The Elks' 7th Annual Garage Sale attracted some 600 people eager to comb over the vast selection of donate items up for grabs. September 3 Ð Flin Flon students who rely on buses to get to and from school will enjoy an even safe ride beginning today. Bright white strobe lights now adorn the roof of each Manitoba school bus, making the vehicles more visible to motorists. September 8 Ð About 40 residents gathered at the steps of Flin Flon City Hall yesterday afternoon to take a stand against same-sex marriages. It was one of more than 300 rallies held across Canada yesterday in support of the traditional definition of wedlock. September 9 Ð The end of an era has come at HBMS with yesterday's demolition of the last remaining company apartments. "It's a significant change," said HBMS Director of Environment and Communications, Wayne Fraser. "For the first time since the 1920s, the Company is no longer in the housing business." September 15 Ð The Flin Flon Fire Department's Eighth Annual Boot Drive for Muscular Dystrophy brought in $5,882 on Friday. "I'm surprised at the generosity of the local area citizen," commented fire chief Jim Petrie. "I shouldn't be, but I am." The fundraiser was held on Third Avenue near the KFC. September 18 Ð Motorists who unlawfully leave their vehicles in restricted parking spots on Hapnot Street stand to face much heftier fines. A new Flin Flon by-law, which received first reading at Tuesday's Council meeting, would increase the fines from $4 to $40. September 19 Ð Flin Flon Bomber President Dave McPherson wants the City to give the Whitney Forum the street address of "57 Memorial Cup Drive" in commemoration of the 1957 Bombers who captured the coveted Memorial Challenge Cup. Mayor Dennis Ballard said the Cup champions are very deserving of the recognition. "That win was a big moment in our history," he said. "That was unheard of, for a small little town to take the Cup. Nobody thought that could happen, and the best part about it was that the team was made up of several local players." City Council will be studying the idea further. Ð The facelift of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Parish continues as work proceeds on a new parking lot. The work comes two years after a major renovation of the church sanctuary, which included the installation of new windows and flooring as well as expanded seating. September 22 Ð Two teenage girls perished and a third suffered serious injuries Saturday night after a single vehicle accident near the intersection of Green Street and the Perimeter Highway.
