Jonathon Naylor Editor It's sure changed in here from when I first came here,' said a delighted Doris Jackson as she surveyed the surroundings. Jackson was among 50-plus guests on hand last week at the reopening of the Seniors Room at the Flin Flon Community Hall. Thanks to a federal grant, the spacious facility looks brand spanking new _ as in new kitchen flooring, new cupboards, new paint, new appliances and more. Jackson, one of many seniors who uses the room, was hardly the only one impressed with the renovations. 'It's quite an improvement,' said Earl Steven, president of the Flin Flon Seniors, which utilizes the room. Renos began last June and by September were mostly completed, with Flin Flon Seniors board members undertaking much of the work. Contractors also lent a hand on a project whose $24,080 budget was covered by Ottawa's New Horizons for Seniors Program. Steven praised Aimee Deans, recreation programmer with the City of Flin Flon, for successfully applying for the grant. 'The seniors took on a large project here,' commented Deans, who gratefully accepted flowers from the seniors at the reopening. Other than the flooring, cupboards, paint and appliances _ a dishwasher, deep freeze and fridge _ the project included a new high-rise toilet for the washroom and some new carpeting. There is also a new kitchen island that, unlike the old one, is mobile. In order to secure the grant, the Flin Flon Seniors were required to give something back to the youth of the community. So members Ann Hardy and Clara Quinn happily led a perogy-making class that included young people as students. Located near the main entrance of the Community Hall, the Seniors Room is used for regular Flin Flon Seniors get-togethers, including regular card nights and a monthly potluck supper. The room is also rented out to user groups such as yoga classes. At last count the Flin Flon Seniors had 110 members.
