One of the major events for the Northern Health Region (NHR) is days away.

This year’s Northern Health Summit will be held in Flin Flon on Oct. 30 at the R.H. Channing Auditorium.

The theme of this year’s summit is “Mamowe Kiskiwasewin Minoyawin,” meaning “shared responsibility for health” when translated from Cree to English. A centrepiece of discussion will be the Truth and Reconciliation Report’s 94 calls to action and how the calls can be applied to health care and social responsibility.

Leaders from several northern communities and First Nations and Metis figures are scheduled to attend the gathering.

The event will include several sessions and informative presentations discussing indigenous traditions and care, including a session featuring Mary Jane McCallum. Originally a dentist and medical professional who worked throughout northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, McCallum now serves as a senator and is a leading advocate for northern patient care.

During the summit, NHR will hold its annual general meeting from 12 to 1 pm.
