The Flin Flon School Division has opened its wallet to the tune of $75,000 for facility upgrades this school year, it was noted at Tuesday's school board meeting. Secretary-Treasurer Debbie Bongfeldt presented a summary that outlined the expenditures as of February 18, consisting of: $33,700 at Ruth Betts School for duct cleaning; library renovations; and a new coat of paint for outside doors. $33,640 at Hapnot Collegiate for gymnasium renovations and painting; gymnasium office renovations; gymnasium equipment room renovations; and weight room renovations. $4,500 at Many Faces Education Centre to paint the gymnasium area. $3,140 at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac for a new sign at the school entrance; and upgrades to the parking area. Bongfeldt noted that $15,000 is still in this year's budget for further school upgrades. That money is slated to be used to renovate the washrooms at Parkdale School. If enough money is left over, washroom upgrades will also be completed at Hapnot. The school board allocated $90,000 for such projects in the 2003-04 school year. Of that amount, $33,748 came from a grant from the province's Public Schools Finance Board. In another matter at the meeting, the trustees voted to name Chairman Jim Wilson as their voting member for the upcoming Manitoba Association of School Trustees (MAST) Annual Convention in Winnipeg. Trustee Gordon Mitchell was selected as the alternate. The convention will be held next month and will include elections for MAST's president, two vice-presidents and directors. See 'Other' P.# Con't from P.# As well, a letter from the Student Services Administrators' Association of Manitoba (SSAAM) advised that Flin Flon Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dean Grove has been elected to a position within the association. Grove has been chosen to serve as the northern regional representative on the Provincial Committee of SSAAM for 2003-04. SSAAM advocates for advantageous educational practices for all students, particularly those with special needs, and the provision of professional support to its members. The group partners with other professional organizations and community groups in an effort to achieve its goals. Trustee Colleen McKee and Chairman Wilson offered Grove their congratulations on behalf of the board. A recap of other matters: Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch offered his congratulations to Many Faces Education Centre student Brittany Lyons, who has been selected as the Flin Flon School Division's nominee for the MAST Student Citizenship Award. School divisions across the province were each invited to nominate one student for the award. Superintendent Veitch announced that Jason Loutit, the 2002 Manitoba Aboriginal Athlete of the Year, will speak to local students in the middle of March. The minutes of a recent school division committee meeting noted that the maintenance department is costing out a new carpet for the library at McIsaac. The project is to be completed over the summer.
