The Flin Flon School Division (FFSD) is looking for public feedback.

As part of a cyclical review of its programming, the division is looking for feedback from the community on its French immersion programming, as well as its Many Faces alternative education programming.

“Every four or five years, you revisit what you’re doing with programming in a certain area,” said Constance McLeese, superintendent for FFSD, adding the practice is common among school boards across the country.

“Some of [what we are reviewing this year] was driven by the Ministry [of Education and Training], which is doing an overhaul of French programming. It seems like a good time to look at what we’re doing. Alternative education is another one the ministry is looking at.”

McLeese said that while school principals
and herself receive feedback throughout the year, this is an opportunity for the public to comment specifically on these two areas. She added it is good educational practice to look at what is happening within the division and to ensure it is aligned with both Ministry and community needs.

“One hopes that the students will benefit from it,” said McLeese.

“If there is something we need to tweak, or change, or modify, that is a point that will pop up. It also gives us a chance to look closely and specifically at that programming. You may be celebrating successes too – it’s not a negative thing. It’s not an audit.”

Further into the review, students will also have the opportunity to give input on programming in these areas.

“Ideally we’d like to prepare something for the board before the end of the school year so that it can inform whatever we do the year after. If teachers say they need more professional development, we can organize for that … it’s genuine information seeking.”

The deadline for feedback is Dec. 20, though McLeese said if submissions are received after that date they will be considered.

Feedback and comments should be addressed in writing to McLeese, and can be e-mailed to [email protected] or dropped off at the FFSD board office at 9 Terrace Ave. or any school division office.
