No changes are coming to Flin Flon School Division (FFSD) policy after cannabis legalization.
The division, acting on a directive from the provincial Ministry of Education, will send a letter out to parents including a series of links regarding cannabis information and how families may be affected.
Back in April, the school division received emails from the ministry regarding a post-legalization cannabis strategy.
“We had several emails on that. This one provided some specific links on the Ministry of Education website and things for people to access. They’ve been working on it for a while, so it’s not new,” said Constance McLeese, school division superintendent.
“What is new is that there’s going to be a letter coming home – the minister has asked us to send a letter to all the students’ parents. Teachers were aware of it, but students’ parents may not be.”
FFSD policy currently outlaws any student from using or possessing substances such as cannabis or alcohol, and provincial cannabis laws restrict any person from using on school property.
“Our policy is very clear – any substance, used on school property by anybody, is a no. It’s the same with alcohol. Just because you happen to be legal doesn’t mean you get to drink on school property,” said McLeese.
