Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson has announced here that the Manitoba school year will begin after the Labour Day weekend until 2008-09. "As a result of the favourable response from parents and school communities to the later start after Labour Day this year, we will continue with this practice for the next five years," Bjornson said. "Establishing the calendar for several years gives school divisions an opportunity for longer term planning and families more time to schedule vacations and recreational activities. Manitoba's tourism industry and communities will also benefit from the extra time off at the end of the summer season." The minister noted there will be 194 school days in 2004-05 and at least 184 of those days must be used for student instruction. Christmas vacation will begin no later than Dec. 23 and extend to Jan. 2 or later as determined by the school board. Spring vacation will continue to be one week from Monday, March 28, to Friday, April 1, 2005, inclusive. The length of an instructional day will remain the same at 51Ú2 hours including morning and afternoon recess, but not including the lunch break. "The Manitoba government remains committed to ensuring school days are used effectively and student academic outcomes continue to be achieved throughout the year," Bjornson said.
