The band program at Creighton Community School will see expansion and an infusion of cash next year.
At its April 20 meeting, Creighton School Division passed a motion to expend up to $75,000 of surplus funds to support the program.
Beginning in fall 2016, the band program will include students in grades 6 through 9.
Specialized grants that were available during the first three years of the program can no longer be accessed. With the cost of purchasing new instruments and materials beyond the capacity of the regular school board budget, the board decided to make a one-time investment to ensure the success of the program.
New vice-principal
Vince Cable has been appointed acting vice-principal at Creighton Community School for the 2016-2017 school year.
Cable, a senior high math and science teacher, will take the position for one year while the current vice-principal, Wendy Bentley, is on maternity leave.
Cable has been a teacher at the Creighton school since 2010.
Grad committee
Creighton Community School will have a total of 33 graduating students this year. The class will have a chemical-free graduation party on Friday, June 17.
Grad parent chairwoman Lynn Richardson and students Katlynn Schaitel and Kaylee Balllantyne attended the April 20 meeting to recognize the board for its support of the event.
The board of Creighton School Division will provide each Grade 12 graduate with an embossed year book, a personalized hoodie, a pendant and a class photo as part of their graduate package. As well, the board will be paying for the students’ graduation dinner and their cap and gown rental.
