The provincial education ministry is holding a series of public information sessions on the new K-12 education review, but there will not be one in Flin Flon.

Board trustees with the Flin Flon School Division (FFSD) discussed the review and sessions during their April 23 meeting, with board chair Leslie Fernandes talking about the events scheduled in the north. Sessions were scheduled to take place in The Pas and Thompson following the meeting.

“The commission is accepting public input until May 30. This means that anyone can provide their ideas or comments on education in Manitoba. We encourage all parents, teachers and community members to have their own voice heard,” said Fernandes.

“The closest to us is The Pas. We’re really at the mercy of the commission (as to) where they decide to hold these workshops. Flin Flon is pretty tiny. Maybe we’re too far north? They are doing one in Thompson and there is one in The Pas on May 6.”

Fernandes mentioned that Flin Flonners hoping to have their voices heard in relation to the review can do so either by mailing the provincial education department or by sending comments online.

“It’s very important that the public provide feedback to help the future of education in Manitoba,” she said.

Trustees with the division have expressed concern with the review, hinting that Manitoba school boards including the Flin Flon board may be amalgamated as a direct result of it.

Travel club

Trustees approved the next trip for the Hapnot Collegiate travel club.

For the first time, the club will head to South America, with plans to send a group of students, teachers and chaperones to Ecuador in 2021.

“It’s the first time they’ve ever gone to South America,” said superintendent Constance McLeese.

Organizer Daniel Dillon and students Linnea McNichol and Andy Richard pitched members of the board on the trip during the previous school board meeting, also providing a report on the club’s recent trip through Europe.
