Two classes at Ruth Betts Community School honoured a Flin Flon-born soldier this month.
Students from the classes took part in a program called Postcards for Peace. Under the program, which is run in co-operation with Veterans Affairs, students write postcards to Canadian soldiers.
Students from Ruth Betts wrote to one soldier in particular – Cpl. Jesse Kowal, a Flin Flon-born solider currently stationed at CFB Valcartier.
Members of the Flin Flon School Division board discussed the initiative at the most recent board meeting on Nov. 13.
“It’s one postcard, but each child writes a message on the back of the postcard to a Canadian veteran or soldier, thanking them for what they do,” said Constance McLeese, school board superintendent.
Students in the class wrote words of encouragement and thanks on the postcards in both English and French. Bilingual messages aren’t mandatory for the program, but students decided to add French text due to Kowal being stationed in Quebec and having learned French during his service.
Arts donation
The school board has received a novel donation from the Flin Flon Arts Council.
Board members accepted an antique tea set from the council as thanks for donating space at the former St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church for Culture Days programming.
The tea set was donated by Sonia Goodman. The three-piece set was owned by her late mother, who was a long-time parishioner of the church.
“We’re going to leave it here in the board room as a commemoration to that family,” said McLeese.
The church was purchased by the school division and the Lord’s Bounty Food Bank last year. The two bodies split use of the building, with the school division operating the upstairs levels for a variety of purposes, including faculty training.
