Hapnot Collegiate will have a new face filling its top administrative post next year.
Flin Flon School Division (FFSD) trustees confirmed current principal Brent Bedford, who is retiring at the end of the school year, will be replaced by Steve Lytwyn.
A former Hapnot teacher and Ecole McIsaac School principal, Lytwyn was named the FFSD’s director of student learning, strategic planning and technology last year. The position will not be refilled and will be eliminated from the division’s budget, with superintendent Constance McLeese saying that decision was made in the run-up to the budget release last month.
Ruth Betts Community School will also see some changes for next year, with principal Amber Zerbin set to take a one-year maternity leave. Vice-principal Mike McClellan will serve as acting principal with Zerbin away, while teacher Craig Bancroft will assume the role of acting vice-principal.
“As far as we know – knock on wood – everybody else should be where they are,” said McLeese at the latest FFSD board of trustees meeting on March 12.
Teachers’ society
The board of trustees also lent their support to a Flin Flon teacher running for the highest post in Manitoba’s largest teachers’ union.
Beatrice Walker is running for president of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society. It is the first time a Flin Flon-based teacher has run for the position.
“We wish her the best of luck,” said Amy Sapergia Green, who read board chair Leslie Fernandes’ report when Fernandes was unavailable to attend the meeting.
“She’s been involved with the teachers’ society a lot over the last several years. We’re excited for her to be running for the big chair,” read Fernandes’ letter.
