Students and teachers received their Manitoba School Boards Association awards during the April 10 meeting of the Flin Flon School Board.
“We were lucky enough we were very fortunate Flin Flon School Division was well represented at the Manitoba School Board Association meeting in Winnipeg. Our little division just worked their butts off and we were so proud, all of you, for the work that you do for us,” trustee Leslie Fernandes told those in attendance.
“Mikylo [Odut] was the proud winner of the Region 4 student citizenship award, which is everybody from The Pas, Thompson, Flin Flon, Frontier, Cranberry Portage.”
Fernandes explained Odut was unable to attend the awards in Winnipeg, but a video clip he made was played in front of 300 delegates at the ceremony.
Hapnot Collegiate’s Equality and Social Justice – Gay Straight Alliance was recognized at the awards with a certificate of merit.
“They were really proud of the work that we do, and they wanted to honour you by giving you guys an award as well,” said Fernandes.
Hapnot teacher Daniel Dillon was awarded the Premier’s Award for Innovation in the province.
“This is a huge, huge honour,” said superintendent Constance McLeese.
“It was Daniel and the kids – again, wonderful kids at Hapnot, who are the best in the province.”
Dillon commended the school board for their support.
“It’s with the support from you guys and the vision that you have that the amazing programs we have … Starting an equity and social justice and gay straight alliance in a small mining town in northern Manitoba – when I first thought about it, I didn’t think it was going to fly,” said Dillon.
“Especially with the board, and you folks have been amazing about it… Thank you very much for that support.”
