The province will foot the bill to replace a leaky portion of the roof at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac. The Flin Flon School Board learned at their meeting Tuesday that the Public Schools Finance Board has passed a motion to provide the $192,500 necessary for the repairs. "The roof has been leaking," said Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch in a previous interview. "The Public Schools Finance Board is responsible for maintaining the structure of the buildings, and this is something we've been asking for for a period of years." The plan is to have the roof work completed over the summer. The superintendent estimated the roof above the second floor represents between 30 and 40 per cent of the total roof at the school. He isn't aware of any major roof work taking place at the school since it opened in the 1970s. In another matter at Tuesday's school board meeting, Chairman Jim Wilson and Superintendent Veitch presented special certificates to a group of community-minded high school students. Nine students from Hapnot Collegiate and Many Faces Education Centre were named recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award for Young Canadians. The award, developed by Prince Philip in 1956, is presented to students who contribute to their community and take part in an outdoor expedition, among other criteria. Winning the award, which consists of a certificate signed by Prince Philip as well as a lapel pin, were: Leanna Campbell; Monica Davey; Jodi Klassen; Britt Lyons; Joanne Churchill; Jesse Durkee; Shawn Bowman; Royal Riehl; and Dustin Lysohirka. All students are part of the Recreation Leadership class at Many Faces. Other highlights from Tuesday's meeting include: Superintendent Veitch noted that the Jump Rope For Heart program at McIsaac raised over $7,000 this year. The money will be used to further research with an aim to reduce heart-related illness. The superintendent pointed out that the schools have been participating in the City's spring cleanup as well as the Flin Flon-Creighton Greening Project.
