The NDP government is urging Flin Flonners and many other Manitobans to take advantage of a subsidy program to help reduce the risk of basement flooding. Flin Flon is among 22 Manitoba municipalities partnering with the province to offer the Municipal Sewer Backup Subsidy. 'Working together, we're helping more families install sewer backup protection and sump pumps in their basements to protect their biggest asset,' said Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux. Through the program, the province provides 50 per cent cost-shared funds to participating municipalities. Municipalities then match the provincial contribution and offer the subsidy to qualifying homeowners. The maximum subsidy offered by municipalities covers 60 per cent of the equipment and installation costs for individual homeowners, up to a maximum per household of $1,000 for in-line backup valves and $2,000 for sump pumps and pits. Some municipalities have chosen to customize their individual subsidy program to meet local needs. As a result of the program, roughly 2,300 homes across Manitoba have been protected from sewer backup and basement flooding since 2011. _ Compiled from a Government of Manitoba news release
