Saskatchewan’s official opposition party has a new face. Ryan Meili, a Saskatoon-based MLA, won the party’s top spot after a leadership vote on Mar. 3. Meili earned 55 per cent of the vote, just ahead of opponent Trent Wotherspoon.

It was the third time Meili had run for the party’s leadership, after two campaigns in 2009 and 2013 that ended in narrow losses. A doctor by trade and an assistant professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Meili began serving in the provincial legislature after a byelection win last year.

The Saskatchewan NDP currently has 12 seats in the provincial legislature, forming a distant opposition minority to the ruling Saskatchewan Party’s 46.
