Creighton and Denare Beach residents could be in for a property tax hike this year.
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall hinted at a boost to the education property tax on Wednesday, reports the StarPhoenix.
Wall told the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities convention that the education tax could be increased to balance next week’s provincial budget, the newspaper reports.
His statement had the opposition New Democrats crying foul.
“This government didn’t save a dime over a decade of resource wealth. Now a short-term dip in oil prices has them scrambling to find more money,” NDP deputy leader Trent Wotherspoon said in a press statement.
“People are rightfully asking where all the money has gone.”
Wotherspoon said Wall’s statement follows previous comments from the premier that he may not forward municipalities a share of PST revenue as promised.
Wall’s government will table its new budget next Wednesday, March 18.
Unlike in Manitoba, Saskatchewan sets education property tax rates. Saskatchewan municipalities still control their mill rates.
