Northern Saskatchewan continues to be the province’s hotbed for new COVID-19 cases. Four new cases in the far north, the only new cases reported in the province, were announced by provincial health authorities May 11. Each of the four cases was reported from La Loche. Over 140 cases have been reported from La Loche and the surrounding area since the outbreak began.

The far north has now, as a region, reported more cases than any other Saskatchewan region. The far north - estimated population, 38,000 - has reported 197 cases and currently has 151 active cases, more than the 163 total and 13 active cases reported in Saskatoon - population 300,000.

Fourteen more people were reported as recovered from the disease May 11, bringing the total of active cases to 199.

Eleven people in Saskatchewan are currently in hospital with the disease. Outbreaks of COVID-19 were in effect in Beauval, La Loche, Lloydminster and Meadow Lake as of May 11.

Meanwhile, the second phase of the Reopen Saskatchewan plan will go into effect May 19, with retail businesses including clothes stores, flower shops, sporting goods and vehicle dealers, entertainment stores, second-hand and thrift stores and u-pick produce locations eligible to reopen, among others. Select personal services like hairstylists, barbers, massage therapists and acupuncturists and shopping malls can also reopen as of May 19.

All staff in reopening businesses are asked to ensure proper hand hygiene and etiquette with coughing/sneezing, along with avoiding facial contact. Line controls, social distancing and customer number monitoring will also be required. Customers will cold and flu symptoms are asked to stay home.

The provincial government approved Lloydminster to move forward with phase two of its portion of the Reopen Saskatchewan plan effective May 19, despite an active outbreak at the community’s hospital.

“All workplaces must be prepared to operate safely for customers and their employees, and take the proper preventative measures,” read a provincial press release.
