Jonathon Naylor Editor A new organization of after-school programs will help make northern Manitoba communities safer. That was the word from Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief as he launched the Manitoba After School Network (MASN) last week. MASN aims to bring together community-based organizations that offer constructive activities for school-aged children and youth. 'The network gives these organizations the opportunity to work together to strengthen after-school programs,' Chief said in a news release, 'and shows our commitment as a government to investing in them and working collaboratively to help our province's children and youth reach their fullest potential.' Chief called MASN 'a pillar' of the province's 'preventative approach to making our communities safer.' He said after-school programs have been identified as an important approach in building safer communities, and Statistics Canada reports that unsupervised time after school is when the largest proportion of youth violent crime takes place. See' Support...' pg. 15 Continued from pg. 1 The NDP government has invested more than $12 million to support the work of the organizations that make up the network, Chief said. The funding includes support for a coordinator to help establish, coordinate and provide ongoing support for the MASN, he said. Flin Flon was one of several communities represented when Chief attended the northern Manitoba launch of MASN in Thompson on March 19. Representatives from Thompson, The Pas, OCN, Pukatawagan, Swan River and Wabowden, among others, were scheduled to attend. Days earlier, on March 15, Chief officially launched MASN across the entire province.
