Manitoba government Transportation and Government Services Minister Ron Lemieux has announced $36.7 million for highway projects to benefit Northern Manitoba communities as part of the province's Northern Development Strategy. "We have increased our commitment to highway construction across Manitoba by $10 million this year and have pledged another $10 million for next year to pave the way to a better future for this province," said Lemieux. The third year of RoadWorks Manitoba, the province's five-year $600 million highway program, will provide $16.4 million for ongoing upgrades and improvements along PTH 6 including: $2.5 million for grade widening and shoulder gravel from north of the Minago River to the Hargrave River; $3 million for bituminous paving and shoulder gravel from 50 kilometres north of Grand Rapids to 75 kilometres north of Grand Rapids; $3.1 million for bituminous paving and shoulder gravel from PR 373 to south of Wabowden Access; $4.6 million for a two-year rehabilitation of the Fairford River bridge; $2 million for the first stage of upgrading from north of Oakpoint to north of PR 229, which involves bituminous paving (thin lift overlay) and culvert replacement; and $1.2 million for upgrading and rehabilitation of the superstructure of the Grand Rapids bridge. In addition, the widening of PR 391 (Mystery Lake Road) through Thompson approved last year for $2.3 million is progressing. The first phase is approximately two kilometres from the end of the current four-lane section to Station Road. Design work on the remaining portion of the project is progressing and when completed will extend the four lanes to the Burntwood River. Funding for completion of the remaining work will be considered in future budget evaluation. Other projects to improve highways in northerly regions include: $3.5 million for grading and granular base course in the vicinity of the Muhigan River as part of the ongoing upgrades to PR 373. $2.5 million for grade, base and bituminous paving for intersection improvements on PTH 10, north of The Pas in the vicinity of Otineka Mall. $1.8 million to continue reconstruction work on PTH 10 from Flin Flon to the Saskatchewan border-a $4.8-million project. $5.5 million for the first stage of the construction of the $25-million Netnak Bridge on PR 374 over Pipestone Lake to replace the ferry crossing and provide an all-weather road to the community of Cross Lake. The province will contribute a total of $10 million over the next two years, fulfilling a commitment under the Northern Flood Agreement. $1.8 million for dust control on northern highways. $500,000 for spot improvements.
