RMTC production of Armstrong's War hits Flin Flon auditorium stage next week

Unlikely allies at centre of Armstrong’s War

Flin Flon is one of the stops for the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s (RMTC) production of Armstrong’s War. The curtain will rise Friday, Feb. 6 at the RH Channing Auditorium.

The live performance tells the story of two rehab patients sharing common ground. Cpl. Michael Armstrong is recuperating while a Girl Guide, Halley, is looking to earn a badge by reading to a wounded solider.

Armstrong, an Afghanistan war veteran, shares his stories with Halley, who is bound to a wheelchair and attending the same rehab centre.

Crystal Kolt of the Flin Flon Arts Council is excited for the performance and its connection to the community.

“We’re really enjoying the connection between the Girl Guides and this story,” said Kolt. “Not that we know of anyone in the arts community in rehab, but certainly in the military and who have gone to Afghanistan.”

Kolt says the connection is both “lovely and intriguing.”

The Arts Council has extended an invitation to all members of the local Girl Guides to dress in their uniform for free admission to the performance.

During the cheese and cracker portion of the evening, included at all RMTC performances, Kolt says the snacks will be switched to Girl Guide cookies.

“It’s just something fun,” she said.

Big productions

The Arts Council had expressed interest to the RMTC that they would like to see the bigger productions that are put on in Winnipeg.

“Armstrong’s War got wonderful reviews and so we’re happy it’s doing a northern tour,” Kolt said. “It has definitely been doing really well in Winnipeg.”

Armstrong’s War began touring on Wednesday in Snow Lake with stops in Churchill and Thompson before the stop to Flin Flon next Friday.

Last year’s performance of Miracle on South Division Street marked the continuation of the RMTC’s annual trip to Flin Flon.

“They are always first-class,” said Kolt. “We’re delighted to be able to support [them] again.”

Tickets for Armstrong’s War can be purchased at Northern Rainbow’s End.
