When the ball drops at midnight – or close to it – friends, families and volunteers will ring in 2015 at the annual First Night Out.
Laurel Mackie, an organizer, says the chemical-free New Year’s Eve celebration has been a hit in the past and she is sure this year will be no different.
“It’s all about celebrating the community and family, and getting to know your neighbours,” said Mackie, who is with sponsor CADAC.
First Night Out began in 1992 with the party originally hosted every year, but it is now held every other year.
This year’s celebration will be held at the Creighton Community Hall, as CADAC will bring the event back to where it started.
In years past, the celebration grew to upwards of 400 attendees, but more recently those numbers have dropped down closer to 200.
Plenty to offer
First Night Out is a chemical-free event with plenty to offer from a potluck supper, to dancing, to a balloon drop with lots of prizes.
The potluck supper is open to all who purchase a ticket, which must be done before Dec. 29.
“We ask people to bring a dish suitable for a large family,” said Mackie, noting many families bring salads or desserts.
CADAC and the Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre will provide turkeys and hams to ensure there is enough for all to eat.
“And the Friendship Centre is cooking for us so we don’t have to worry about food handling,” said Mackie.
After supper, partygoers will be able to enjoy entertainment, dancing and plenty of prizes.
“We have tons of prizes,” said Mackie.
There will be spot dance prizes as well as hundreds of door prizes handed out.
As the clock nears midnight – or at least the party’s version of midnight – everyone will gather around in a circle and count down to 2015.
Balloons will drop from the ceiling with prizes for everyone – some valued at up to $200.
“We hope that everyone comes out and celebrates this community,” said Mackie. “It’s a great kickoff to a new year with no substances. Come out and enjoy your family.”
Tickets for First Night Out will be on sale until Dec. 29 with limited space available.
