The Flin Flon School Division has ponied up a $500 reward to help solve a costly incident of vandalism to McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac over the summer. The cash will be awarded for information leading to the prosecution of the person or persons who threw a beer bottle through a school window, which police believe led to a chemical fire. "It's been my experience that people who get involved in these situations have a hard time keeping it to themselves," said Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch. "So I'm sure other people are aware and, with a reward, there is an increased probability of someone coming forward." On July 20, one or more vandals threw beer bottles through windows on the west end of McIsaac. Police believe one of those bottles struck stored chemicals, resulting in a fire that damaged the science room and adjoining lab, as well as a neighbouring French Immersion classroom. With the investigation at a standstill, Veitch is hopeful the $500 reward will be just the incentive needed to ensure the vandal or vandals are brought to justice. If someone is arrested, Veitch said it's the school division's intent to take legal action to try to recuperate the costs that resulted from the incident. Anyone with information on this crime may phone the Flin Flon RCMP at 687-7488 or 687-3491. Aftermath The aftermath of the chemical fire is still being felt at McIsaac. Veitch said the science lab is not in use at the present time, meaning students have had to be moved to a regular classroom for science studies. He said he is hopeful the classroom will be back in use by Christmas. Also, since the vandalism tied up school division maintenance staff, a number of projects at McIsaac and other schools had to be delayed. They included upgrades to the soccer field at McIsaac, enhancements to the washrooms at McIsaac and Parkdale School, and different painting projects at the schools.
