The opposition NDP is pressuring the Saskatchewan government to reinstate the province's Aboriginal Employment Development Program. This comes after Statistics Canada reported the number of aboriginals in the provincial labour force shrunk by 1,600 between 2011 and 2012. The M_tis labour force shrunk by 400. 'We will never be all that we can be as a province if we continue to leave whole segments of our population behind like this,' said NDP employment critic Cam Broten. Added Broten: 'We cannot keep waiting for meaningful action on this crucial issue.' A recent report by University of Saskatchewan economist Eric Howe claims the elimination of the Aboriginal Employment Development Program is a key factor in the decline of off-reserve First Nations employment. The program was cut by the Wall government in 2009. _ Compiled from a Saskatchewan NDP news release
