No one can resist a good bargain. The Flin Flon Elks Club found that out Saturday when their giant sale of second-hand items attracted some 600 people. In the process, the club's Eighth Annual Biggest Garage Sale Under One Roof at the Elks Hall raised about $4,000 for charitable causes. "We're happy with it," said club trustee Ernie Poirier. "Every bit we can raise is good for us." A wide variety of items awaited bargain hunters of all ages. For the younger set, there were toys, comic books, board games and puzzles. For the older crowd there were vinyl records, exercise equipment, romance novels, TVs and microwave ovens. And the price was right, with many shoppers able to cover their tabs with pocket change, though Poirier said it wasn't uncommon for people to tip generously. By the end of the sale, about 65 per cent of the thousands of articles had been snatched up. All items were donated by area residents eager to help the Elks with one of their major fundraisers. "It's always been like that; people in Flin Flon are very good that way," said Poirier. Though the estimated profit of $4,000 is down from previous years, Poirier said the club was pleased with the outcome. The money will be split between the Elks Hall Building Fund and the Elks and Order of the Royal Purple Fund for Children. The building fund money will continue repair work on the Elks Hall that began in 2002. The fund for children, a fund for youngsters across Canada who require medical assistance, has helped a handful of local children in recent years, providing hearing aids and a special computer for a blind girl.
