Flin Flon's Margaret de Kock has been honoured with this year's Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Literacy. De Kock served as coordinator and instructor of the Community Adult Learning Centre from its inception in 1992 until her retirement in December 2003. "It is with great pleasure that I have this opportunity to recognize the contributions Margaret de Kock has made to the advancement of literacy in her community and the province as a whole," Lieutenant Governor Peter Liba said in a statement. "As the first coordinator of the centre in Flin Flon, she has overseen its growth from a one-to-one tutorial model in the basement of the library to a dynamic adult learning centre on Main Street." The award recognizes exceptional contributions to literacy in Manitoba by individuals, groups or projects. Aside from her involvement with the Community Adult Learning Centre, de Kock helped develop the local family literacy program called Read to Me, which is still going strong. She also spent numerous volunteer hours researching and developing an aboriginal grammar game called Kistikewin Itiniwok. In addition, de Kock was a leader in the formation of the Northern Literacy Coalition, which enhanced the networking of practitioners and learners in Northern Manitoba.
