There are more questions than answers after RCMP shot and injured a young man in Norway House.

The shooting happened this past Sunday, July 20, during a baseball tournament on the northern Manitoba reserve, CBC reports.

Witnesses speaking to CBC identified the injured man as Evan Cromarty, 20, whom they said appeared to be unarmed and holding up his arms when an officer shot him.

“I was in total shock and you know I still am,” Brian Cromarty, Evan’s father, told CBC on Monday. “I haven’t slept well all night and I was very, very, very upset I guess. Not in anger, just not knowing what had just happened.”

RCMP described Evan’s injuries as non-life-threatening.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been summoned to independently investigate the incident.

On Monday, Kevin Brosseau, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Manitoba, and a colleague met with Norway House Chief Ron Evans to discuss the shooting.

“The meeting was positive, and concerns regarding the event and the relationship between the community and the police were discussed,” the RCMP said in a press release.
