Reminder’s sales manager steps down

Karen MacKinnon may be leaving The Reminder, but the newspaper will always hold a special place in her heart. “I want to say thank you to the customers and the people I’ve worked with,” says the newspaper’s long-time sales manager.

Karen MacKinnon may be leaving The Reminder, but the newspaper will always hold a special place in her heart.

“I want to say thank you to the customers and the people I’ve worked with,” says the newspaper’s long-time sales manager. “It’s been an amazing job.”

MacKinnon joined The Reminder in March 2006, making her one of the longest-serving, if not the longest-serving, salespeople in our nearly 70-year history.

With a friendly, approachable demeanour, MacKinnon developed a strong rapport with clients over the years.

“The businesspeople in the community are fantastic,” she says. “People don’t realize how much they give to our area.”

In addition to ad sales, MacKinnon has been part of the eyes and ears of The Reminder, with members of the public often sharing story ideas with her.

Originally from Sydney, Nova Scotia, MacKinnon moved to Flin Flon in 1977. Since then, she has worked in a range of jobs that often involved the public – perfect for a people person such as her.

MacKinnon was a salesperson at The Bay, once the retail hub of Main Street. She has also worked in the meat department at the Modern grocery store, managed the Reimer Manitoba Express terminal and been a clerk at Gardewine, among
positions.

She says she looks forward to finding new ways to contribute to the community. She is already seeking a third term on city council in this month’s election and sits as a director on the MPI board and the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce.

MacKinnon looks forward to spending more time with her family, which includes recently retired husband Barry, daughters Chrissy and Maggie, son-in-law Brad Clarke and granddaughters Mattie and Hollie.

Karen and Barry plan on staying in Flin Flon, which after nearly 40 years feels like home.
