The Reminder has been honoured with three more community newspaper awards.

In its circulation tier, this publication took third place in the Best in Class category at the 2014 Better Newspapers Competition hosted by the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association (MCNA).

Newspapers were judged on 11 different criteria, including community news coverage. The Reminder scored the highest in its circulation tier for community news with 130 of a possible 150 points.

In fact, only two community newspapers in all of Manitoba – the Swan Valley Star & Times and the Steinbach Carillon – scored higher for community news. The Portage Central Plains Herald Leader tied The Reminder’s 130 points.

Judges also considered advertising content, where The Reminder earned 82.5 of a possible 100 points – second in all of Manitoba only to the Steinbach Carillon.

In terms of presentation, The Reminder achieved 92.5 of a possible 100 points. In all of Manitoba, only the Erickson South Mountain Press had a higher score.

Visual appeal

For its visual appeal, The Reminder took second place in its circulation tier in MCNA’s Best Layout and Design category.

Across the border, the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association (SWNA) also recognized The Reminder at its 2014 Better Newspapers Competition.

The SWNA awarded this publication third place in its circulation tier in the Best Front Page category.

The awards left the staff of The Reminder proud yet humbled.

“These awards are a testament to the hard work of our staff and the community that so graciously supports them in their very important roles,” said Reminder editor Jonathon Naylor. “We would like to thank the MCNA and SWNA for recognizing what we always hope to achieve: a high-quality newspaper that informs, entertains and sparks community dialogue. We also thank our readers for their continued encouragement and support.”

This marked the second consecutive year that The Reminder took third place in the MCNA’s Best in Class category, which recognizes general excellence.

By virtue of its cross-border coverage, The Reminder belongs to both the MCNA and the SWNA.

Since first hitting the stands in 1946, The Reminder has published more than 17,000 editions. It is owned by Boundary Publishers, a subsidiary of Glacier Ventures Inc.
