At a Saskatchewan Community Newspaper Association (SWNA) event on Friday, April 22 The Flin Flon Reminder earned five awards including the top prize for First Nations coverage for a story by editor Jonathon Naylor.

Naylor’s feature story on the Merasty family, published December 9, 2015, chronicled the 11 children of Napoleon and Jane Merasty and how their family life served as a foundation for success. It earned top spot in the best First Nations coverage category, which includes papers in all circulation classes in the province of Saskatchewan.

The Reminder also placed second in both the best overall paper and best front page categories for newspapers with a circulation under 1,200.

A special section from 2015, The Reminder’s annual Guide to Summer, earned two awards. The section placed third in the open circulation best special section category. As well, the cover story, written by Reminder publisher Valerie Durnin, placed second in the best tourism story or series of stories category.

“It’s a pleasure to see the work of The Reminder team rewarded,” said Durnin. “Our staff is hard-working and dedicated to providing the best coverage possible for the community.”

Because it operates in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan, The Reminder is part of two community newspaper associations, SWNA and the Manitoba Community Newspaper Associa-tion (MCNA).

MCNA will be handing out awards on Friday, April 29.
