Reminder earns awards in Manitoba, Saskatchewan

The Reminder received a combined 16 honours at the Better Newspapers Awards competitions held separately by the Manitoba Community Newspaper Association and Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association over the last month.

The Reminder received a combined 16 honours at the Better Newspapers Awards competitions held separately by the Manitoba Community Newspaper Association and Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association over the last month.

The awards, held April 14 and April 28 respectively, honour excellence in the newspaper industry. As a cross-border publication, The Reminder was eligible for all awards.

The Reminder was named best all-round newspaper in its circulation class in Manitoba, and won best overall paper, best front page, and best editorial page in its circulation class in Saskatchewan.

The Reminder also took home 12 awards that were open to all community newspapers in the provinces.

Editor Cynthia Bigrigg placed second for best education story and third for best environmental story in Manitoba, and third for best First Nations coverage in Saskatchewan.

Reporter Eric Westhaver took second for best feature story in Manitoba. Westhaver earned first for best arts or culture story and best black and white photo, as well as second for best sports story in Saskatchewan.

Former editor Jonathon Naylor won best news story of the year in Manitoba and first for best colour photo and best feature photo as well as third for best healthcare coverage in Saskatchewan.

Publisher Valerie Durnin won second place for best series of advertisements in Saskatchewan.
