Area residents are proving to be on board with recycling as the Flin Flon Recycling Centre has posted an increase of 19 tonnes from this time last year.

Administrator Deb Odegaard is pleased with the trend catching on, as the centre continues to increase is tonnage each year.

“That’s pretty exciting,” Odegaard said.

Last year, the community recycled 214 tonnes. Already this year, the centre has surpassed that weight with many more tones expected by the end of the year.

Odegaard credits promotion as well as the free-curbside pickup in Creighton to the community’s success with recycling this year.

In an effort to continue the positive trend, Flin Flon Recycling Centre summer student Becky Davis will work with area businesses to improve and revamp their current recycling programs.

“I’ll be able to go into a business and see how they are recycling,” said Davis,  “and see what’s working for them and how I can make it easier for them.”

Davis is also encouraging businesses who have not yet started recycling to join the program.

“It’s easier than you think and we make it very accessible,” she said, eager to see the program get started.

Davis, a student at the University of Winnipeg enrolled in nursing, has not helped any businesses with their current recycling programs yet, but is ready to begin as soon as the phone calls come in.

The summer student will provide information for proper recycling as well as tips on ways to make it as easy as possible.

Odegaard says businesses can either participate in the pick-up program, with a fee, or bring the recycling to the centre themselves.

“Even if Becky comes and helps you out, you aren’t committed to the fee,” said Odegaard. “We just want to know how we can make it work best for you. As long as you’re doing it and it’s coming to us somehow – that’s all that matters.”

A strong believer in recycling, Davis says she is “trying to help change the world and doing my part.”

Growing up in a household that did recycle, Davis says she learned early on the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle.

“It’s just so easy,” she said. “It helps the environment so much. I just wish more people would recycle.”
