The Flin Flon Recycling Centre has wrapped up their busiest year yet.

In total, the recycling centre recycled 510 tonnes of household materials, cardboard, paper, aluminum and glass in 2018, more than any other year in the centre’s history and 47 tonnes more than the centre processed last year.

The centre recycled a total of three full 10-tonne trailers of electronics, along with 665 kilograms of batteries.

In terms of hazardous waste, 78 boxes of fluorescent bulbs and 36 barrels of hazardous products were dealt with by the centre. 13 tubskids – large, pallet-sized crates – of paint were received at the centre, with 11 of the tubskids being shipped out for further processing.

As part of the increase in activity comes an increase in overhead. This year, the Flin Flon and District Environmental Council, the group that operates the recycling centre, requested an increase in per capita funding from both the City of Flin Flon and Town of Creighton, going from $11.75 per capita last year to $12.50 per capita this year.

“They’re looking for a small increase,” said city councillor Colleen McKee.

“Overall, it’s less than $700.”

City council discussed the funding request during their Jan. 8 meeting but have not yet made any funding commitments.
