Tuesday January 27, is National Family Literacy Day and to celebrate this event, Crystal Kolt of the "Read to Me" program and the Family Literacy Committee have organized a special day for the whole family: children, parents, grandparents and caregivers to come out and have some fun together. This event will take place in the Rotary Room downstairs in the Flin Flon Public Library beginning at 10:00 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. and then from 5:00 p.m. till 6:30 p.m. There will be celebrity readers, door prizes, crafts and music and there is no charge! An adult shall accompany children. What exactly is family literacy? It is quite difficult to define, but it includes all the ways that parents, children and extended family members develop and use their reading skills to accomplish day to day tasks and activities, whether it be at home or out in the community. Different ways of communication include drawings to share ideas, writing messages, keeping records, making lists, reading and following direction or just by sharing stories and ideas through conversation, reading and writing. The Family Literacy Program is really how adults become role models for their children. They see and hear you read (and enjoy it) and they want to do the same. Family literacy is very important because sometimes parents and caregivers aren't aware of the strong influence they have on their children's attitude towards reading and learning. This is especially important in the birth to age six years, when children are like sponges and pick up more than we realize. Children who are read to and who receive a one on one with a parent or guardian on a regular basis do better in school and seem to have a better self imagine. It gives the child a sense that they are a worthwhile person to spend time with. "Some experts say that 80% of children who experience simple immersion in reading and books will help lead them to real, independent readers by school age". Family literacy just makes good sense! A great way to spend quality time with one another! So mark Tuesday, January 27 on your calendar and we will see you at the library! You can call 687-5413 for information.1/16/2004
