The "Read to Me" program was established in Flin Flon in February 1995, sponsored by the Community Adult Learning Centre in Flin Flon and assisted by a Family Literacy Grant from the National Literacy Secretariat. The concept was that a child who is read to will become a reader and that "Parents are a child's first and most important teacher". A child must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. In the early years the "Read to Me" program was held in the Rotary Room, but it is now held at McIsaac School. The program is eight weeks long and consists of two one-half day sessions per week starting at 9 till 12 noon. There are three programs in the school year with the first one already held in Cranberry Portage from September 15 to October 21. The second just began on Tuesday, October 26 till December 16 at McIsaac and there is still an opening if any one is interested. The third and final one for this school year will be held from January 25 to March 17, 2005 in Flin Flon. Once a child has gone through the program, he or she must wait at least 18 months before applying again, thus giving everyone an opportunity to enrol in this excellent program. The child must be between the ages of two and five years, however, younger siblings are welcome as well! See 'Dinosaurs' P.# Con't from P.# Every Tuesday/ Thursday the day is organized with a theme such as dinosaurs, the alphabet, nutrition, recycling and folk tales. There is a 'circle time' with songs, finger plays, stories and games. There is also an adult group in which various videos, guest speakers and discussions take place. It's a good time to "vent" regarding child rearing trials and tribulations! There are free snacks for the kids as well as crafts and library books to read. The "Read to Me" program is free of charge. The funding for this program is provided by the Manitoba Government through Adult Learning and Literacy as well as local donations. For more information please call Crystal Kolt at 687-5413.10/27/2004
