New nursing station

A tender has been awarded for a new nursing station to be built in Grand Rapids.

Provincial Health Minister Sharon Blady said the facility will ensure a wide range of health services are available in the northern Manitoba community for years to come.

“We know modern facilities ensure health-care providers are able to offer quality care to the people in their communities,” said Blady. “This nursing station will ensure a number of health-care services will be available to meet the needs of area residents, including primary care and chronic disease services.”

Con-Pro Industries will be constructing the new nursing station, which will replace the existing facility, built in 1983.

The new facility will include three exam rooms, a two-stretcher trauma room and offices for visiting professionals such as physicians, midwives, mental health workers and regional diabetes program staff.

“We welcome this next stage in building a new modern nursing station for the entire community,” said Helga Bryant, chief executive officer of the Northern Health Region. “It will provide a great environment for health professionals to practise as they meet the health-care needs of area residents.”

Construction on the facility is expected to wrap up in 2016.

Support for techies

Ten tech-minded Manitoba entrepreneurs will each receive $3,000 and other supports through the TechFutures grant program to help make their enterprises successful.

Recipients were to be acknowledged Monday evening in Winnipeg at the premiere screening of Innovation Alley – The Documentary, which profiles Winnipeg’s vibrant start-up community.

“We know the path of a new entrepreneur can be difficult,” said Jobs and Economy Minister Kevin Chief. “TechFutures is about introducing our young people to the many experienced business owners who want to help them make their new idea a reality. Manitoba youth are leading the way in many sectors of our economy and a wide range of technologies. They are creating the types of innovative businesses that will be a key to growing and maintaining a strong, competitive Manitoba economy.”
