Residents are in for a unique entertainment experience this summer when the world-renowned RCMP Musical Ride trots into town. The choreographed show, which involves 36 trained horses and serge-wearing RCMP members, will be at the Foster Park soccer field on August 3. "I know there is a lot of enthusiasm," said Flin Flon RCMP Cpl. Leslie Beck. "You get a lot of national pride watching the Musical Ride. It's a wonderful experience." Based in Ottawa, the Musical Ride has been described as an air show on horses. For half an hour, the riders and horses perform different formations with names like "The Dome" and "Bridal Arch." "Everybody has to experience the show to appreciate how good it really is," commented Flin Flon Director of Recreation Brenda Russell, who saw the Ride the last time it came to Flin Flon in 1992. "An opportunity to host a prestigious event like this doesn't occur very often," she added. A host committee involving representation from different community groups is bringing the Ride to town and organizing pre-show entertainment. Various family activities and stage entertainment will lead up to the show, which residents will view from bleachers and lawn chairs. To accommodate the Ride, the Creighton Sportex will be transformed into a temporary barn, where the horses will stay during their visit. Residents will have the opportunity to stop by the "barn" and see the horses and riders. Ticket prices for the show have yet to be determined. All money raised will be shared amongst charitable groups for different youth-oriented projects. In conjunction with the show, a drug awareness colouring, poster, and essay contest will be held at local schools. Winners from each school will receive their prizes at the Ride. The day after the show, August 4, local RCMP officers and Musical Ride members plan to compete in a baseball match at the Creighton ball diamond. There won't be any charge to attend, though residents will be encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Lord's Bounty Food Bank.
