It hasn't been the kind of start to the holidays that Flin Flon RCMP were hoping for. Just two weeks into a holiday check-stop campaign, police have already charged two impaired drivers and four others for different driving infractions. "We would like to see the number of people charged at zero," said Cpl. Leslie Beck. "For the opportunities we've had to do check stops, not all people are complying." The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) consists of random check-stops throughout the community. The campaign began on December 1 and will run until January 6. Cpl. Beck encouraged residents unfit to drive to make use of taxi services, Operation Red Nose, which drives people home in their vehicles, or to simply walk home if weather permits. "In a city the size of Flin Flon, with all of the avenues we have for transportation, people should not be driving intoxicated.," she said. "There's no reason for it." STEP is part of a Canada-wide RCMP vision for the nation to have the world's safest roads by 2010. The goal is to reduce the number of people fatally or seriously injured on Canada's roads by 30 per cent. Operation Red Nose, which is being organized by the Rotary Club of Flin Flon, will operate every Friday and Saturday night throughout December, as well as New Year's Eve. The number to call is 687-7331 (RED1).
