Are there really any benefits to a young woman when she enters the Flin Flon Trout Festival Queen Mermaid Pageant? Well, one family certainly thinks so! As a matter of fact, they would go so far as to say that entering the pageant was a turning point in Kristy Janvier's life. Growing up, Kristy was a shy, quiet young lady. She participated in dance since she was about eight years. However, she really seemed to blossom when the Kelly Waterman School of Dance came to Flin Flon and Kristy was exposed to such adjudicators as the internationally renowned Brian Foley. Kristy was also involved in the Hapnot Drama Club where she took parts whenever she could. Then, she decided to enter the Flin Flon Trout Festival Queen Mermaid Pageant. According to her family, this was the "turning point" for Kristy. "The combination of the public speaking, and having to interact with others, gave Kristy the unique experience she needed to give her the confidence to move ahead," said her mom, Penny. Kristy completed her first year of Arts and Science at he University of Saskatoon along with her level one and level two diploma in Theatrical Make-up Artistry from the Master Mind Academy at the same time. She also won the Masala Model and Talent Search contest in 2002 in the Professional Division. Then, Kristy auditioned for Disney (twice) for tours in Japan. She auditioned with 600 other girls and she got the parts! Kristy then moved to Orange County, California, to continue her work with Disney. She obtained her first on-stage experience in the role of "Elaine" in the play Arsenic and Old Lace at the Curtis Theatre in Brea and then she got a part in Don't Dress for Dinner. She was also a show-girl in the Tribute to The King Elvis Presley. Kristy obtained roles with Disney as "Auriel" in The Little Mermaid and "Aurora" in Sleeping Beauty at Disney Land. Kristy and her family would like to encourage the new graduates coming out of Hapnot Collegiate by telling them that the possibilities are out there, all you need to do is participate! Kristy's latest nomination is for the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards in 2005. Also, she just received word that she has been selected for the Disney Cruise Lines in Florida. Kristy will be home briefly in June and then will fly to Toronto for training prior to starting her new role on the Cruise ship Disney Wonder. Kristy is the daughter of Penny and Leon Janvier. She has one older sister, Kelly.
