Quad Routes a privilege, not a right

City council will be forced to revoke in-town quad and snowmobile privileges if off-roading “idiots” continue to hit a busy Flin Flon street.
Quads allowed
Quads are allowed in city limits only on designated routes.

City council will be forced to revoke in-town quad and snowmobile privileges if off-roading “idiots” continue to hit a busy Flin Flon street.
Veteran city councillor Bill Hanson issued the warning in a bluntly worded speech at last week’s council meeting.
“To the idiots on quads and trikes and the side-by-sides going down Channing Drive on a daily basis, please stop it,” he said. “You’re going to ruin our quad routes and our skidoo routes, because if it carries on, this council will be forced to take matters into their own hands. And that would be a sad thing, because it’s a very few people doing this.”
Hanson said the same individuals are behind the offences and while he wishes the RCMP could catch them, he’s not sure what police could do.
“So I would just say to parents, if your children have quads and you see them on the street, take them away,” he added.
In 2012, then-mayor George Fontaine also raised the spectre of quad routes being removed due to irresponsible behaviour.
“We’ve had a pretty good history of the use of quads in town, but recently we’ve been having some real complaints about people driving in silly conditions and also driving in our parks,” Fontaine said at the time.
“We were very clear when we brought in the law allowing quads in the community that if the rules weren’t adhered to that that law allowing it would be revoked.” Fontaine added he “would like to remind parents – because I don’t think it’s adults doing this – to make sure that they have some control of their kids that they’re letting go on machines like this.”
Designated routes
The city allows ATVers and snowmobilers on designated routes within the community. The routes are meant to offer access to and from trails outside city limits, not provide a means of transportation within the community.
Maps of designated routes are available at city hall.
