Jonathon Naylor Editor The Flin Flon Trout Festival might consider changing its slogan to "no longer just for people." For the first time, the festival's popular Main Street Carnival included a chance for proud masters to show off their canine companions. "For our first year, I think it went really well," said Leona Kemp, who organized the Northern Rainbow's End and Junior SPCA Club Dog Show. The event, held outside Kemp's Northern Rainbow's End flower and gift shop, showcased about a dozen furry entries. The pooches were introduced by name to the crowd and given a chance to perform tricks and take part in a small parade. Kemp has loved dogs all of her life but was inspired to establish the show by her son's adorable morkies, Roxy and Toby. "They just kind of grew into my heart," she said. In lieu of an entry fee, owners were asked to bring a donation for the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA. Food, dog treats and some cash headed to the animal-advocacy organization. Help and expertise "It was nice because the SPCA benefitted from it as well," said Kemp, adding that the show could not have happened without the help and expertise of the Junior SPCA's Courtney Whitmore. Kemp looks forward to making the show an annual event with new categories and more participation. Each winner in the July 2 event received a rose and a $20 gift certificate from Northern Rainbow's End. They were: Best of Show - Lexi (owned by Sheila Leclerc) Honourable Mention - Bella (Reid Banting) Cutest Dog - Buddy (Connie Pruden) Biggest Dog - Carly (Samara Whitbread) Fastest Dog - Bandit (Heather McIntosh) Smallest Dog - Sushi (Vanessa Johnson)
