A social worker from Pukatawagan is one of the newest members on a crucial provincial board.
Several new members joined the Manitoba Municipal Board on June 5.
Out of nine appointees named, only one is from northern Manitoba. The northern appointee, Valerie Whyte, hails from Pukatawagan and works as a resource worker with the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation.
According to a provincial government press release, Whyte serves as a community manager, mental health worker and youth program coordinator. Whyte also holds a counselling certificate from the University of Manitoba and a pair of bachelor degrees in arts and social work from University College of the North.
The Manitoba Municipal Board works as a semi-judicial body, operating under the purview of the provincial government on multiple issues, including appeals of property assessments, expropriations, waste management, water rights and municipal assessments. Board members serve part-time and meetings are open to the public.
Other appointees include Winnipeggers Amit Kapoor, Michael Kowalson and Donald Mitchelson, St. Georges’ Margaret Bonekamp, Roxane Anderson from Selkirk, Gilles Vielfaure of Portage la Prairie and Brandon’s Rick Borotsik. Steven Lupky of Arborg was reappointed to the board.
No current members of the board are from Flin Flon.
