Pukatawagan’s Mathias Colomb Cree Nation (MCCN) announced it has made an offer to buy the Port of Churchill and Hudson Bay rail line – and it’s inviting other northern Manitoba First Nations to join the ownership group.
In a Jan. 8 news release quoted by CBC.ca, MCCN calls its bid a “historic deal” that “will provide substantial benefits to First Nations and Manitobans alike.”
“The Port of Churchill will offer First Nations a tremendous opportunity for additional outside investment and to increase the economic opportunities for all,” MCCN Chief Arlen Dumas said in the release, “while at the same time taking a lead role in ensuring the protection of the lands, waters, plants and animals on which these assets sit.”
Until the MCCN release, it was not publicly known which First Nations were involved in attempting to buy the port and rail line from OmniTrax Canada.
OmniTrax Canada president Merv Tweed said in a separate news release that the company supports MCCN’s bid, according to CBC.ca.
