Residents are invited to commemorate one of Canada’s darkest days this weekend.
On Sunday, Dec. 6, at 5:15 pm, the Women’s Resource Centre will host a candle vigil at Pioneer Square.
The vigil will mark the 26th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre in which 14 women were gunned down at an engineering school after being separated from the men.
“These young women were talented, ambitious and courageous,” read an email from the Women’s Resource Centre. “They were murdered before they were able to fulfill their professional aspirations and live their dreams for their future.”
More broadly, the vigil will represent an opportunity for residents to speak out against all violence against women.
“Help us deliver the message to our community that we will stand united to end violence against women and girls,” said the centre.
The vigil, held annually in Flin Flon since the 1990s, traditionally includes a moment of silence after the names of the 14 Massacre victims are read aloud.
Participants of all ages are invited to attend the vigil. Candles and a lighter are supplied.
